  17. <p>     She won international praise for faithfully steering Haiti to
  18. its first free and honest elections. But last week former
  19. Supreme Court judge and interim President Ertha Pascal-Trouillot
  20. was arrested and charged with complicity in a foiled coup
  21. against her own 10-month-old government in January.
  22. </p>
  23. <p>     The surprise arrest stemmed from a takeover attempt led by
  24. former Duvalierist strongman Dr. Roger Lafontant after the
  25. populist Roman Catholic priest Jean-Bertrand Aristide won the
  26. presidency in the Dec. 16 vote. Pascal-Trouillot has said that
  27. she was kidnapped from her home and held hostage for 10 hours
  28. before loyalist troops stormed the National Palace and ended the
  29. siege. But Lafontant contends he is not guilty of trying to oust
  30. the government, because Trouillot willingly handed power over
  31. to him. Many Haitians believe that Trouillot and other members
  32. of her government stole millions from the national treasury
  33. during her administration, but no charges have been leveled to
  34. date.
